Education and learning seem similar, but are they? The essence of learning is ‘experience’.
Education is a formative transfer of information and knowledge from one individual to the other.
Learning is a lifelong process of transforming information by seeing, observing and experiences into knowledge, skills and behaviours. Learning can be intentional or unintentional, conscious or unconscious, for better or for worse. Learning is a progressive mindset. We are actively changing lifelong learning to a self-motivated education.
What leads us to learn new things? It is our interests, curiosity, and motivations and the desire for discovery. How can we learn new things? The many different ways in which we can learn are by observing, experiencing, reading books or even speaking to experienced people.
Why should we learn new things? It helps us to increase our knowledge and skills and improve our behaviour.
The word ‘education’ is interpreted differently by different people. For some, it is a synonym for formal schooling, obtaining knowledge, skills and attitude while others take it as lifelong learning. Education is systematized learning where a society passes on the knowledge, values, and skills from one generation to another. Education is a formal and temporary process where the acquired knowledge is measured with a pre-defined set of curriculum to follow.
Education depends on our age and we receive it at a certain age. Learning has nothing to do with our age. We learn all our lives. Learning is much deeper than memorization and recalling information. Deep and long-lasting learning involves understanding, connecting between prior and new knowledge and ability to transfer knowledge to new and different contexts.
